Effects of 6 Routine Care Procedures on Transcutaneous Oxygen Tension in Neonates

Abstract
The changes in transcutaneous oxygen tension during 6 routine care procedure (bottle sucking, bathing, oropharyngeal sucking, intravenous injection, heel puncture, physical examination) of 26 neonates were observed.
The maximum decrements of oxygen tension and recovering time to pre-care oxygen tension of each procedure were compared between full terms(10), preterm(6), and sick babies(10).
Among 6 procedures, bottle sucking, oropharyngeal suction and heel puncture were more stressful than other procedures in each group.
The mean decrements of oxygen tension of bottle sucking and oropharyngeal sucticn in sick babies(8.5mmHg, 11.3mmHg) and preterm(8mmHg, 4.5mmHg) were more profound than those of full terms(4.6mmHg, 4.lmmHg).
Recovering time over 1 minute to pre-care oxygen tension were found in 4 of 6 procedures in sick babies and preterm but only 1 procedure in full terms.
